Banks are typically reluctant to lend cash to businesses that do not have a lot of earnings and possessions. They also want proof of the viability of a business and thus need that a lot of operations, particularly little ones, be in company for a particular quantity of time before they want to hand over any money. Because of this, a medium-size business often has few cash producing choices when needs occur. One alternative available, but commonly neglected, is factoring. This is an excellent method for a small company to acquire money.

Since the mid 1980s Ortiz Truck & Haul have been successfully running their freight business. They've delivered goods for nearly every major industry in the nation and for 20 plus years, business was booming as they've traversed the country in all weather for all clients. During the boom times from 2002 to 2007 Ortiz Truck & Haul was the mastermind of a top-rated accounts receivable in the trucking industry. Few customers were ever late on bills and those clients who were, were sure to turn in their late payments within a reasonable amount of time. Times were great for everyone, and the cash was flowing. It was just one year later, in 2008, when the economy in the United States took a sharp decline, and both large and small businesses started to notice the squeeze on their pocketbooks: everyone had suddenly gone silent. Business slowed to a crawl

. Worse still, it was noticed by Ortiz in early 2008 that even though most of their loyal customers were on time with their payments, there were a few late bloomers who were starting to spread the disease. Spring changed to summer, summer changed to fall, and the CEO of Ortiz, Jeff Medina, was beginning to feel very uncomfortable indeed whenever he looked at their weekly Accounts Receivable reports. There was a growing list of clients who now owed them back debt.He had gone to his administrators and asked them what the problem had been. Were they doing things different, or wrong, when it came to collecting overdue accounts? By his bookkeepers records, this wasn't the case. Perhaps he was losing his customers to his competitor, who seemed to offer very low prices with no guarantee of quality or performance, and these clients who were in debt to his company had possibly disappeared leaving him stranded. They couldn't afford to pay him their debt, but they could afford a lesser service, maybe. But after doing the cursory research for this and talking to friends in the field, he found that alas, no, customers of Ortiz hadn't gone elsewhere. They had just gone home. The situation looked dire to Jeff Medina. He had employees to pay, goods to ship, trucks to maintain and overhead that was almost unbearable when compared against the lack of funds that were coming in. After work he would confide in his wife, Sylvia, and neither were unable to stop the constant worry over the lack of funds.""I have a bad feeling, Lin,"" he would say with deep woe.""What could you do differently?"" she would ask.Jeff would stare off for a moment and then close eyes. In his mind he could clearly see the fleet of trucks purchased over the many years. He could see them traveling, bringing goods to all of his clients. But somewhere, a haze would form over his fleet and the vast number of vehicles would disappear to but a few. What could cause this ultimate death spiral of business?""I think I know what it could be,"" Jeff said. ""For way too long I've been relying solely on profits received from invoices. For too long I've been allowing our clients to let their accounts become overdue."" Sylvia would look at her husband lovingly, and holding his hand would say 'It's such a harsh economy these days and our clients must be having difficulty meeting their responsibilities'.""Sylvia was trying so hard to support her husband in these worrying times, while Jeff was weighed down with the worry of how he was going to handle this situation he found himself in.The next day Jeff strolled into his office and was determined to sit down and make every phone call to every client who had owed Ortiz money. Now, it wasn't the most efficient way to spend a day as a chief executive, what he really needed to be doing was to be overseeing all of the other intricacies of shipment and delivery and reaching out to prospective clients or retraining his sales team to do the same. But, he felt like he was doing something proactive to help his business, even though he had staff on salary to do just that thing. Wasting money, wasting time - even with the best of intentions, Jeff knew that he was in trouble.

After a half day of contacting debtors in vain - they dodged his calls or promised to call back at worst or made minimal interest-only payments at best - he was about to throw in the towel when his secretary Veronicaerley knocked at his door.

""Jeff, can I have a word?"" she queried, standing in the doorway.

""Sure thing Veronica, come on in."" Jeff leaned back in his chair and looked expectantly at Veronicaerely.""Well, I did a little searching this afternoon and tried to figure out a way out of this mess Jeff."" She opened up a folder she had been carrying and pulled out a small wad of papers, placing them on the desk in front of him.""Have you ever heard the word factoring?"" Veronicaerley asked.""It sounds vaguely familiar. What is factoring""? he asked. She began, ""Well, it's really very simple. Basically, factoring invoices means that we would get paid immediately for the loads we haul.""""Immediately?"" Jeff interrupted.""Yes, immediately,"" she continued, ""In a nutshell, it's pretty easy. We start by having a professional account manager review our figures and help us set up a company profile. That profile will also include investigating our accounts receivable aging reports, our existing customer credit limits and so on. Additionally, the factoring will help to determine the creditworthiness of our customers independent of their credit history with our business. It provides a very broad view.I see, Jeff said. And then what?Following the completion of their review and once we've been approved for a contract with the factoring company, then we sit down to negotiate conditions and terms. Theres a lot of flexibility depending on the business volume and credit histories. This company tells us what the cost will be to purchase factoring for our accounts receivable. We come to an agreement and the funding starts pouring out.Jeff was still a little concerned. He leaned forward in his chair and studied the paperwork very closely.""It sounds too good to be true, Veronica,"" he said.""Now, now, I know, I thought the same thing. But think about it, Jeff: they've guaranteed that experts will do all the paperwork, and that will free us up to do what we should be doing - focusing on our customers in good standing, and that kind of stuff. They appear to be very flexible, Jeff,"" she drew a circle around a paragraph on the document before him.""How flexible?"" asked Jeff.""It seems that they personalize their factoring charges so that the amount they're prepared to work with is commensurate with our client's debt and our needs. It only takes 2 to 4 days for this to be figured out. """"That sounds pretty good, seeing as we tapped ourselves out with bank loans last year to repair the fleet and money sure is tight. We need to keep business rolling as normal and every day were going unpaid, were closer to facing some serious problems in both the short and long term,"" Jeff said.Jeff took in a long slow breath, then looked at his secretary with something like hope in his eyes.""Exactly. This could be the answer to our prayers: it will solve many problems we're facing due to these unpaid debts.""Jeff thought about this and agreed with Veronicaerley. The customers who were in debt to Ortiz Truck & Haul were professional resources of the company, but they were also long-standing friends. Jeff wasn't prepared to lose these relationships just because they were having financial issues at the moment. Jeff knew only too well that the whole economy was floundering, and that it was not going to change overnight. That unknown amount of time could create a disaster situation for both of them if he wasn't careful in how these debtors were handled. Of course he didn't want to lose any more money, but he didn't want to lose business either.""Let me go over this tonight Veronica, and thankyou."" Veronica nodded, stood up and left the office feeling that she had helped her employer keep on his shirt and hers too.Jeff sat behind his desk and looked over the details Veronica had not mentioned in their meeting. He wondered if there might be other problems freight factoring could help Ortiz Truck & Haul with? With his pencil gliding down the sheet he noticed that the factoring company could help fray the cost of fuel with fuel discount cards and fuel advances. In fact, Ortiz could receive up to fifty-percent cash advances upon load pick-ups. Jeff was a typical business man: he despised binding contracts that didn't allow room to breathe, so he was pleasantly surprised to see that the factoring company didn't require a long term contract, that there was no minimum volume required, and that there were no sign-up fees.""I must tell Zachary the good news,"" muttered Jeff to himself.Zachary is Jeff's son-in-law, and he really admired the ideas behind Ortiz, so much so that only two years before he had started his own transportation service business. At that time Jeff knew the struggles Zachary would face, but he still encouraged him to follow his dream. With the faltering economy, if a big fish like Ortiz was hurting, a little guy like Zachary was about to catch his death. But, maybe the answer for both of them was in freight factoring, and Jeff was going to find out very soon.A few short months later, after completing the application process, having the legal experts review his credit history, accounts receivable, and statements, finally Jeff was beginning to find his way out of the hole his debtors had created for him. They adopted reasonable factoring purchase contracts and stopped wasting their own precious time trying to collect debts. They used that time to refocus their efforts in being competitive in new territories. Jeff looked back on the dismal months of life before freight factoring and almost shuddered at the thought. Had he missed the boat on this one, he probably wouldn't be in business today.

Factoring in the Future of a Trucking Business: A Story Eric Hill let the phone ring on his desk. His morning coffee cooled and his cigarette smoked away in the tray: Eric is thinking, and pondering the biggest decision he's ever had to make for his trucking business. Hill Trucking Company was at a turning point of growth and Eric had to decide if signing with a factoring company was the right way forward.

More than forty years ago Eric's father had started this business working as an owner-operator and eventually growing Hill Trucking Company into a fifteen trailer fleet. Yes, they had survived some very difficult times when it appeared like they might go under, and even Eric's mother had jumped into the cab at times to make hauls. His father had worked long enough to see the price of hires drop dramatically during the recession and to see the explosion of fuel prices afterwards. Now the company was solely in Erics hands and he wanted to live to see it in better shape for his sons.

There just never seemed to be enough money to go around, and certainly no spare cash, but to move his company successfully into the future he needed a steady and reliable cash flow. He had employees to pay. They had families and household bills too. A few of the refrigerated trailers really needed some maintenance, and in order to stay competitive he really wanted to invest in specialized haulers to meet the increasing requests for loads of agricultural and energy equipment. Every time he had to turn down a request, Hill Trucking looked weak in a very strong market.

His father would have told him to wait and to take his time adding on new technology. Eric allowed himself a good hard chuckle. He remembered when his father was totally against installing GPS units in the cabs. He would say, Why do you need the voice of some woman to tell you to get off at an exit that has been the same exit that has been there for years? He smiled to himself as he remembered his father poking fun at the other drivers who switched to automatic, even though automatic was quite obviously more efficient (though less manly). He knew his father's days were long gone and new technology was very important for the business, like having Qualcomm to reduce communication time for bills of lading.

Eric knew he was right in his forward thinking. How would he take Hill Trucking to the next level? More importantly, how could he afford it? Funding was all tied up in the mortgage for the office and garage and in the fuel bills. Thankfully he'd just finished paying off the bank loan for the installation of satellite radio in the trucks.

He wondered about factoring - was this the answer for him? There was a lot he didnt understand about the process. It sounded like a ninth grade math problem and he wondered how this would fit into the trucking business. Factoring companies buy your invoices and manage your accounts receivable for a certain percentage of the invoiced amount. In return, the factoring company pays the trucking business straight away, providing immediate cash flow for the business to pay staff, purchase fuel, and do any repairs or maintenance. Without the assistance of factoring, you have to wait for customers to send you the payment which is often 30 days late. In those 30 days, a trucking company cant pay its bills and employees in invoices.

Now it was time for Eric to do his homework. He had heard of companies charging for same day money transfers, advancing a percentage of the money owed to your business, while the rest is held in a private account if the bill wasn't paid within sixty or more days. Plus it was worse still if the customer didnt pay up at all because then the factoring company would take it right out of the money supposed to be coming to you! Through the grapevine, hed also heard about how some companies suddenly slipped you onto a sliding scale of percentages even if you had already signed a lengthy contract for maybe 3% or 7% so there you are with 10% coming as a cost to you out of the freight bill. His friend Ronnie who had a trucking business in Missouri, was run nearly into the ground by a factoring company that charged him the full freight bill on top of the factoring fees. Well, what was the point of going to a factoring company if there was shady business like that going on?

However, it all turned out to be very simple. All the factoring companies he researched were open about their business practices and very friendly on the phone when he called. Their customer service actually knew things about their company and spoke in nice clear English so he could understand what was being explained. He didnt mind signing an exclusive contract. In fact, he was quite pleased with the idea of a long-term contract because he knew this was a one-off and he wouldn't have to keep going back and forth to different companies. Nobody charged him for credit checks and they offered him a fuel advance on the pick-up of the load. Many companies offered a non-recourse factoring program that suited him just fine. Also he was happy to hear how much he was offered in terms of percentages on the freight bills. It was good money.

For Eric it was quite a relief to be dealing with the factoring company. They were extremely helpful and more personable than the bank staff. It seemed as though those bank people spoke another language, but these factoring guys knew the trucking business and spoke to him like a client, not like a beggar for a handout. The factoring companies didnt worry over his credit and the debt troubles his father had had in the past of the company. All the factoring company was interest in was the credit of his customers and on their reliability: this worked great for Eric because he and his father had created a very strong and loyal list of clientele over the years. He knew immediately that there would not be any problems when they were contacted by the factoring company regarding their invoices. His clients wouldnt think poorly of Hill Trucking and the factoring companies appeared capable of handling the accounts receivable in the same polite manner that his father had used over the years.

Eric stepped out of his office to let his secretary know to expect the arrival of the factoring contract shortly. He felt exhilarated by the new possibilities that would make the future of the company fun again and put the stress of the difficult times behind him. He suddenly realized that, with this new cash flow, he could actually expand Hill Trucking Company and who knows, move into Canada, which had always been his dream. He was a happy man again knowing that he had just made a decision which would guarantee the success of his business and his sons wouldn't be inheriting a financial mess.

Trucking Factoring  Articles

So It is not a loan? asked Terry Murray, reclining back into his chair and crossing his legs. The woman sitting across the desk from Terry smiled at him, shaking her head. Not quite, she said.Terry Murray owned a small trucking company, and his business had recently fallen on difficult times. Certainly the trucking business can be an extremely profitable venture, and for many years it had been that way for Mitchell. His company was called Morgan Trucking, named after both of his grandfathers, Hugh and Timothy. Both of these men had been very hardworking and had set a great example for Mitchell.Disaster had struck half a year ago, when two trucks in Mitchells fifteen truck fleet went down. One was a roll-over and ended up in the trucking graveyard: the other was involved in a serious and costly accident. Terry depended on his full fleet, and missing two trucks was devastating . In addition, he just didn't have the available cash to buy a new truck, plus repair the other one.Paying of bills in the trucking industry is always a major cause for concern for businesses.

You could go a month or more before bills were completely paid off. In the long run, this wasnt an issue, but if problems arose, you could find yourself in trouble.Terry wasnt a bad owner, and he hadnt messed up. Certain events had occurred that he couldn't possibly have predicted, and now he had to find a way to protect his business and prevent it from ultimate devastation. And that's why he found himself across the desk from this woman. Terry knew she was employed by a Factoring company and that her name was Allison. Terry had come across her company as he sat in his office late one night, pouring over the internet for some solution to his problem long after his employees had gone home.Allison explained. it is really not a loan at all: we actually buy your accounts receivable. We're not giving you finance to be repaid later: we're purchasing something from you, and when you can you can buy it back. That way were protected from a complete loss, but youre protected from the outrageous fees you would find in a loan from the bank.Terry agreed. It sounded good to him, almost too good.Allison laughed. I'm not sure that you believe me, she chuckled. No, I do, I just think it sounds a bit too good to be true. I thought I was going to lose my company.Allison nodded. Yes, we get a lot of that. There's no way we want to see you lose your business. You work hard, youve put everything you can into it. Sometimes you need help. That's why we do what we do.Well, I'm very grateful that you came to see me today. No problem - I'm just down the road. We normally do it all online but I was happy to come and visit you today, Allison said with a smile. Let's work out a solution to your problem. And right there and then they created a business profile. Terry filled the form out, with Allison available to help him if he needed it. The profile filled Allison and her company in on Mitchells company, and would help them determine if he was suitable for factoring. In truth, not all companies were. Some businesses are beyond the help of a Factoring company, while other businesses weren't in enough financial stress to warrant it. Listening as Terry filled out his form, Allison was pretty sure he was a perfect candidate for factoring. When the form was done Allison took it and slid it into her briefcase. She then stood, reached across the desk and shook Mitchells hand. He stood before they shook as well, and then smiled. Terry walked Allison to the door where they said 'Goodbye', then he went back into his office. All his staff members were there, all seven who worked in his office. Sitting behind his desk once more he could hear the familiar sounds of his office workers going about their daily business. He shut his eyes. He had felt so helpless lately, was sure the whole thing was collapsing, and would take him with it. Talking to Allison though, learning about factoring, it felt like a weight had been lifted from his shoulders. He sat back in his chair and ran a hand through his graying but still thick black hair. The long nights, where he couldnt sleep. The terrifying panic attacks that occurred regardless of where he was. He could feel it all fading away. He wasnt out of the woods yet, there was still a lot of work to be done, but he could feel it. He was still here; he knew this was the right path for him, and he felt proud that he had taken the appropriate steps to sort out his problems.Terry couldnt help but think back to when he had first started the business. He had opened a restaurant at age twenty two when he was fresh out of school. It had been successful. Offering home cooking in his own hometown, his business had really prospered. But he had gotten bored. He wasn't passionate about the food industry. He thought about it for a long time, then decided it was time to sell his restaurant. He took half a year off, and in that time he thought to start Morgan Trucking. And that's exactly what he did. For the second time in his short life he created a company from the ground up. The business had been an instant success. Then disaster! The two trucks went down and suddenly his success wasn't looking so guaranteed. He was nearing fifty. He didnt think he had it in him, to save this company. But he couldnt give up. Just the thought of shutting down, cutting his losses, laying off his workers - the whole thing made him physically sick some nights. He didn't want to quit - both for himself and for his staff members. And now it seemed as though he wouldn't have to - all because of Factoring. Mitchell's eyes opened, he sat forward in his chair and turned on his computer. He had things to do. He could be thankful later, for now, it was time to work.

The reason why Truck Establishments Make use of Factoring Firms.

As the operator of your own company, you may likely be much more than knowledgeable already of the difficulty in making sure that capital issues do not become a predicament down the line. After all, the toughest thing that can in all probability come about for your firm is to find yourself involved in a long and hard situation that leaves you forever looking for the resources you really need on an on-going manner.

For pretty much any enterprise in this predicament, the trouble can come for waiting for work to clear up and actually be compensated into your bank account. Invoices, checks, and the like can take some time to actually to beprocessed which could leave you with temporary capital troubles. Luckily, there are approaches out there for establishments to investigate-- and among these is factoring firms.

Factoring firms will, in trade for your bill of sales, grant you with the cash right away so you don't need to fret about the lingering time frame that could make paying the expenses and getting materialsmore complicated. With this type of arrangement, invoice factoring can end up being tremendously valuable for various businesses who have to get out of a money lure which they have gotten themselves in.

Due to the fact that, relying on the scale of the work, it can take up to 60 days for several companies to get paid out then it's significant to cover your own back and definitely not leave yourself resources short to pay off the monthly bills. After all, how many firms possess two months earnings just lying there to address all their expenditures until they make money?

This is especially true of trucking firms. They have the tendency to manage lots of accounts which means a considerable quantity of collection time concerns business owner themselves. Striving to get paid off promptly can become an extraordinary trouble and this is the key reasons why you employ truck factoring companies who are pleased to help out truckers primarily.

As all of us determine, trucking is an incredibly big market with countless agencies out there handling hundreds of operators. Regrettably, many of these drivers land up in money difficulties simply because they are still waiting for work from six weeks earlier to actually pay them. When this is the circumstance for a trucking business, consulting factoring firms for solutions maybe the ideal choice left.

This means that a truck company can pay off the wages of the work force, keep all the cars refilled with gas and continue to surmount, develop and expand without continually waiting for the cash which is taking too lengthy to come in. Trucking Businesses working without a factoring program used are leaving themselves at critical risk, as competitors cash out quickly and go on to grow.

There's absolutely very little to be worried about when it comes to employing a Factoring agency-- they aren't like a banking company or an individual who is going to leave you with a significant stockpile of financial debt to pay back. You give them legitimate invoices from job you have already completed , you are only speeding the payment system.

In the United states of America, where truck agencies thrive, factoring providers are not considered getting a loan in any capacity. This private arrangement then allows both parties to benefit and experience a convenient future-- it provides the factoring agency a guaranteed resource of cash flow to put into the list and it furnishes the trucking company the needed cash that they sweated to obtain.

The trucking company gives their invoices to the factoring company. The trucking factoring company then collect the payment amounts from the trucking company's customers. Factoring has been all around for hundreds of years and has been adopted for decades by lots of varying markets-- but none more so than truckers. While you could lose out on a small part of the money, something like 1-3 % depending upon who you work with, it signifies that you are getting the funds today and can actually begin setting the money to perform.

After all, an IOU or an invoice is not going to finance overheads, is it? For trucking establishments when the hard earned cash can be excellent one day and gone the next, it's up to the drivers to work prudently and to make sure they are leaving themselves with a notable quantity of time and money to get through the week until they are compensated once more.

So the next occasion your trucking company is having some momentary cash flow issues and you are putting in an excessive amount of time chasing inactive paying customers, why not begin thinking about employing a factoring businesses as a manner to get your money and give yourself a more pleasant future in the eyes of your trucking workers and your bank balance?

Traditional Bank Loans

Finance through a bank loan is the normal, or traditional, way of financing your business. These loans can be a life-saver, but they're not always available to every business. As an example, a newly formed business may not have the required assets to qualify for a bank loan, and even if they did, it's usual practise for a bank to use the business itself as collateral. This means that if you default on your loan payment you could lose your entire business. In addition, while you apply for a certain loan amount, that is all the financing you are entitled to. Once the loan is paid off, you can then apply for another loan if the need arises.

What Are Trucking Factoring Companies?

Trucking Factoring companies don't offer loans, and you don't go into debt when you get money from a Trucking Factoring company. Rather the financing you receive from a Trucking Factoring company is based on money your business has already earned, but have not yet received. Trucking Factoring companies actually purchase your accounts receivable or at least part of them for a percentage of their total worth, Normally around 80%-95%. The amount of money you can receive is based on the amount of money you have earned and the accounts receivable you are willing to sell. Once a Trucking Factoring account has been created for you, it will continue for as long as you need it, with the money available continuing to grow as your business grows, and providing cash as you require it.

Benefits of a Trucking Factoring Company Vs. A Bank Loan

Not every business can benefit from Trucking Factoring account financing because you have to have a business with accounts receivable, however there are many benefits for those who can access this type of finance.

1. There is no debt. Since the Trucking Factoring company actually buys your accounts receivable you don't actually incur debt like you do with a bank loan. One of the main benefits of this kind of financing is that your business credit rating and your personal credit rating won't be affected. In the event that your business fails, you wouldn't have to be concerned about someone coming after your personal or your business assets in order to pay off a loan. The debt goes onto your credit report with a bank loan, with only one missed payment adversely affecting your business credit: it would also affect your ability to secure insurance, and may reflect on your personal credit rating as well.

2. No Collateral Required. Another great benefit of using the services of a Trucking Factoring company instead of a bank loan is that there is no collateral required for the Trucking Factoring company, because the Trucking Factoring company is 'buying' your accounts receivables. In addition, while the Trucking Factoring company does run a credit check on your customers whose accounts receivables are offered for financing, the state of your credit is not an issue. This means that it's easier for new businesses to access the finance they need through a Trucking Factoring company, providing their accounts receivable are in good order. A bank may believe you haven't been in business long enough to be able to cover this risk.

3. You'll receive the money faster. With a Trucking Factoring company you can actually get the money you need faster. Once the Trucking Factoring company assures itself that the customers in your accounts receivable are likely to pay their debt, the money is usually in the account within 24 hours. With a bank, there are vast amounts of paperwork, then the loan has to be underwritten, which can take months before you actually see the loan if it is approved.

4.You receive interest up-front. With a bank loan interest continues to build, and this has to be paid the whole time you have a business loan; however with a Trucking Factoring company there is no interest - they take it right off the top by deducting it from the total amount of receivable accounts. So you don't have to worry about monthly loan repayments, and you don't have to worry about the amount of interest payable, because all the money in the account is yours to spend.

As you can see, there are several benefits that makes considering financing through a Trucking Factoring company over a traditional bank worthwhile. In addition, there are other benefits that a Trucking Factoring company can offer you, outside the scope of a bank. The most important benefits is that once you sell your accounts receivable to the factory company, you don't have to take time away from running your business to collect the money owed from reluctant to pay customers. Since these accounts belong to the Trucking Factoring company, this is now their job. Trucking Factoring companies are very good at collecting these debts, saving you the time and effort that you need to devote to your growing company.

Another bonus is that, because the Trucking Factoring company has evaluated the quality of your customers' credit before buying the accounts receivable, you learn valuable information regarding your customers, like which ones are likely to pay, and which ones are less likely to pay. While a Trucking Factoring company is not the only way for your business to obtain the money it needs to keep growing, it does offer a type of financing well worth considering.
